IN TOM BENNET’S
“ALONE”

A. Introduction
So long as an individual cannot accept the fact of what he is, cannot permit himself fully to be aware of it, cannot fully admit the truth into his consciousness, he cannot move beyond that point: if he denies the reality of his condition, he cannot proceed to alter it, cannot achieve healthy changes in his personality. This thought is expressed in Gestalt Therapy as the 'paradoxical law of change,' which states that a person begins to change only when he accepts what he is p. 89 (www.wikipedia.com).
“…..the problem of self-alienation - a condition in which the individual is out of contact with his own needs, feelings, emotions, frustrations and longings, so that he is largely oblivious to his actual self and his life is the reflection of an unreal self, of a role he has adopted.” (Nathaniel Branden, The Disowned Self, 1971).
This paper will attempt to answer what is (are) self-alienation’s value(s) in Tom Bennet’s “Alone”.
B. Analysis
This paper will focus on psychological approach of self-alienation. Tom Bennett was a successful man. He achieved many honors and awards. He was a pride. In 1985 Tom spent seven months traveling alone through Western Europe and parts of Eastern Europe— into Hungary, East Germany, and Yugoslavia—and Africa, sketching while traveling and absorbing new stimuli from the places and people. Experiences such as the darkness in the atmospheres of East Germany left from the days of the Nazi occupation affected him subconsciously. Subsequently, voyages into northern Africa such as Morocco led to contrasting experiences to those of the Western world in the Islamic societies that must have had a profound impact on his art making, even though he was not aware of it at the time.( http://tombennettart.com/)
Alone to cry
Alone to laugh
Alone to smile
Alone to frown
Alone to live
Alone to die
Alone to wander
Alone to discover
Alone to learn
Alone to live
Alone in pain
Alone in hurt
Alone in joy
Alone in the morning
Alone in the night
Alone in the afternoon
Alone in this life
Alone in this world
Alone in bored
Alone in knowledge
Alone in this state
Alone with people
Alone at work
Alone right now
Alone when I was born
And alone when I will die
Alone walking through life
From the first line until the twenty seventh line of poem reflect that the speaker spends his life and does everything alone never asks someone’s help neither shares with the others.
Without any pride
How can you be satisfied
Living your life like you do
When you know there is someone out there
Who could really use a friend like you
In the twenty eighth line until thirty second line the speaker feels that he need someone to share with and thinks of the possibilities that there is one could be his friend.
No one will know how I live
No one will know who I am
No one will ever get to know me
Because I am destined to spend my life alone
From the thirty third line until the thirty sixth line the speakers feels that his loneliness is destiny and none will knows him.
I am always alone
It’s no fun to be alone
To do everything on your own
To live with no recognition
To share my pride with no one
Wanting to have someone
To live my life with
From the thirty seventh lines until the forty fifth line the speakers express his feeling of being alone. He feels sick of being alone. He feels so hurt of not being known. He had none to share with his successful.
But for now
I will continue alone
And all alone
In the three last lines make a decision to continue to be alone. He ignores and denies of his need of someone to share with in his life.
C. Conclusion
The speaker becomes a self-alienate because of his own feeling not because of the society. His experiences influenced him to be self alienated. Self-alienation is an action to alienate our own self from social life and we deny our need as zoon politico who needs each other because we feel that the difficulties to find society which comforts us.
